The Medical Department is envisioned as being very involved in ship activities and charity work. The opportunities are plentiful for serving both our local community and shipmates. The medical department is responsible for the physical and mental well being of the ship's crew. We also assist as necessary with ongoing areas of research and data collection as we continue our voyage throughout the galaxy (and our immediate home area of Appomattox). Our medical staffs have an interest in various areas of medicine, biology, psychology and science in general.
Positions within the department:
Chief Medical Officer: This is the Department Head who manages this department. The CMO has specific administrative, management and medical duties involving all positions within the department.
Counselors: Responsible for mental well being of crew. Engage in therapeutic groups and individual counseling as necessary. Makes referrals to psychiatrist. Advanced training in Psychology and Social Work are necessary.
Medics: Perform basic emergency care. They assist physicians and nurses in emergency situations. Medics have first aid, CPR and EMT training.
Nurses: Perform basic medical care. They assist surgeons and physicians performing exams, surgeries. Requires RN or LPN from accredited nursing school.
Physicians: Responsible for physical and mental well being of the crew. Performs annual physicals and medical diagnostic tests. A medical degree from an accredited medical school is required.
Psychiatrist: Medically trained, responsible for mental well being of the ship's crew. Utilizes therapies and pharmacology to attain positive results. Medical training from accredited medical school with emphasis on Psychiatry.
Surgeons: This officer has more advanced training as a physician with a specialization in surgery. A medical degree and internship in surgery are required.
